Black Screen Upon Wake From Sleep
Ever since upgrading to 10.8.2, my 15' MacBook Pro (Late 2008) will regularly have a problem waking from sleep. This initially happened once every couple of days, and now is happening multiple times a day. The symptoms are as follows: after waking from sleep, the laptop screen remains black.
Black Screen After Waking From Sleep Mac
The laptop is non-responsive to any of the keys (including function keys), or the mouse. The computer is actually running at this point (I can remote login via ssh), just not interacting or displaying anything.
I've waiting several minutes with no change. Eventually, I either press and hold the power button, or login remotely and shut it down. I've also noticed the last several times this has happened that the computer had already come out of sleep by itself before I opened it. This morning, it got worse.
Not only was the computer already running, but it was running hot with the fan on high. This problem was also reported in another thread, but since that thread is now marked 'solved' I started a new one. Here is the other thread:. I installed the supplemtal update and restored my Energy Saver settings to the default last night but I'm not sure if I have left my Mac long enough to get to the deep sleep that causes the problem. I have let it sleep for a couple hours and so far the problem has not surfaced but will need to test the deep sleep state before getting too excited.
I was pleased to return to my Mac after a coudple of hours this morning and wake it up without a problem. Fingers crossed and I will report back either way. I've been having the same issue since upgrading to ML, but this past Monday it happened again and I have been unable to get it to come back. This is on a mid-2007 MBP, and I don't think it's a problem with the graphics. It has only happened on ML and only after sleeping.
Usually a couple of reboots fixes the issue, but I've had no luck this whole week. I've only noticed the issue occur when I put it to sleep when the charger isn't connected. I don't think I've ever had the problem when closing the lid while charging. Hey guys, look time viewer, first time comment, I too have this same problem, I bought my MPB retina display late 2012, 10.8.2, for the past few months everything is fine, but lately, it went mad, everytime I close the lid, BOOM, I open it, it goes Black, or sometimes, the fan goes at high speed. Few hours ago, I updated to 10.8.3, it went mad every single time I close the lid, previously, only occasionally. 😟 Hope this help? Thanks jadewocky for opening this thread 🙂.
MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 768 MB Software OS X 10.8.3 (12D78). I, too, happen to have a solution! If you ever wake your mac up and see the blank screen, but you know you have open apps and work of any worth not to lose in a forced restart, then all you have to do is: 1. Close the lid back and watchout for the sleeping indicater, wait until it begins to 'breathe.' Open the lid back, there is a 30% chance you're going to see a functional login window, if not, close it back again.
Make sure every time you close the lid you wait until it's actually sleeping, then open again. This time, there is a 60% chance you're going to see the login screen. The fourth time time you open the lid, there is a 90% chance it's going to work! This is more of a preventive case than a curable one, it all depends on the OS state before you closed the lid. Empty the chaches (from /Library/) like richardjamesc had suggested earlier and make sure you're not suffocating the RAM; 400 - 500 of free memory space prior to putting the mac to sleep should be suffecient to prevent a blank screen upon wake up.

Running 10.13.1 on a 2012 MacBook Air (TB1) with an XFX RX480 8GB in an. About 50% of the time when waking from sleep, the screens turn on, but stay black, requiring a reboot to get it working again. The eGPU is detected fine when plugged in and after a log out, starts working, but 9/10 times, when unplugging the eGPU, the same issue occurs where the screens are on, but go black. DisplayPort/HDMI audio is also distorted, but I can get around this with a USB audio device. I cannot seem to find any other reports of this, and the sleep/audio issues did not occur in Yosemite/El Capitan/Sierra when using the same system and enclosure with a GTS450.
(Unplugging caused crash of course, since hot plugging was not supported in these versions) Is it an issue with High Sierra, or perhaps the GPU?
