There are a couple free programs out there you could use with 3d visualization built in. Our youth ministry is currently using Chauvet ShowXpress which is a free software (the usb controller/adapter is $400-700, but not needed for visualization).

There is also FreeStyler with a similar built in 3d view. With either of them, there are built in fixture files, while less known fixtures require building a fixture file, but it's not terribly difficult. Of course, the 3D view is limited & doesn't get everything perfectly, but it can be a big help. I've attached a couple screenshots from ShowXpress.
